Immediate drop on demand technology – A novel technology for cell dispensing in a nanoliter range
Lena Schober, Research Fellow, Fraunhofer Institute For Manufacturing Engineering And Automation

The Fraunhofer IPA developed the immediate drop on demand technology (I-DOT) to provide a fast and flexible non-contact liquid handling system enabling dispensing cells and liquid without the risk of cross-contamination to a precise volume in nanoliter range. Liquid is dispensed from a special source plate with a nozzle at the bottom. The small diameter keeps the liquid due to capillary forces inside the well and prevents leaking under normal pressure. To release a defined amount of liquid a short compressed air pulse is given through a quick release valve into the well, exceeding the capillary pressure in the nozzle. Droplets with a defined volume can be spotted directly onto SBS-plates or other cell culture devices. In this study MCF-7, fibroblasts and hMSCs were tested for viability, adherence capability, apoptosis induction, proliferative and differentiation capacity after printing. All cells had a viability > 80 %, showed no apoptotic induction and similar proliferation rates as the control. Differentiation capacity of hMSCs after printing was unimpaired. I-DOT is an automated dispensing platform which can be easily integrated into automated work stations. It enables accurate cell transfer and shows promising potential for single cell and non-invasive stem cell application, 3D-bioprinting and biomarker screening.

SiLA Driver Development Made Easy
Axel Wechsler, Group Manager Laboratory IT, Fraunhofer IPA

SiLA standards and control software are available and the number of SiLA-compliant lab devices is growing. But it's not growing as fast as it could. One reason for this is that in common perception SiLA driver development is expensive. Small lab device manufacturers also face the fact that they need trained software specialists to develop their own drivers and that there is quite an entry-barrier to climb before the first SiLA driver is ready to deploy. Fraunhofer IPA has accepted the challenge to provide a software solution that removes this entry barrier and cuts on driver development costs significantly. Result of our development is a SiLA Driver Development Kit that is available for use at no cost and provides all necessary means to create a working SiLA driver in just minutes. The talk will give a quick feature overview and a short presentation of a live implementation of a SiLA driver.

Automated DNA Preparation and PCR Setup for High-Throughput Food and Feed Analysis
Ivo Meier-Wiedenbach, Product Manager, BIOTECON Diagnostics GmbH

Can I register for presentation and later send the abstract? Sonja Smith: Hi there, you can register for the event and send the abstract later, this is not a problem when were you thinking of submitting the abstract approximately? The poster submission deadline is the 24th September 2015 Me: I mean the oral presentation I would send it end of next week? Sonja Smith: I am sure that is fine. Please send it directly to my colleague in charge to make sure we have received it Mrs Sara Spencer s.spencer@selectbio.com and refer that Sonja has advised you to send it to her

Quality Control (QC) Calibration Method for Determining Reproducible results
Petar Stojadinovic, Senior Manager and Engineer, Partner

Laboratory Automation equipment is an increasingly essential component of life science laboratories. Used to boost the productivity, repeatability of volume transfers, Automated Liquid Handling (ALH) robotics must be optimized to achieve precision and accuracy in liquid delivery. To address this need, AT (Automation Trainer LLC), is a leading expert in laboratory automation and training, and a supplier of liquid handling quality assurance measurement systems for calibrating equipment. Based on years of practical laboratory experience teaching thousands of students, we have developed a comprehensive curriculum for ALH instruction captured in a calibration kit meeting industry demand and user pains. Significant scientific or market need-- Our users are sales, service, and researchers that all utilize ALHs that require calibration with actual CVs that measure accuracy and precision: sales needs to prove instrument capabilities convincing customers with demonstrations that perform actual pipetting within specifications and require minimal setup time, service people need an efficient and cost effective method for calibrating equipment in the field for site or factory acceptance. Users need optimum performance out of their equipment to not experience process cost impacts and validate processes for QA/QC. A inexpensive and easy to use calibration kit is needed to assure users of proper functionality after every service call, install, move, and operation to qualify demonstrations and operational requirements. Market opportunity-- Is to satisfy the user driven market need of a traceable calibration kit from educationally developed good practices adopted from trustworthy relationships with users and vendors and long withstanding hands on trainings based on years of industry experience dedicated to our students. We have developed a user community through our educational course and can satisfy their pain of having an easy, trust worthy, reliable, time efficient, and cost effective method for calibrating their equipment for their specific instrument, liquid class, and volume range.
