Rapid Pathogen-Biomarker Based Universal Diagnostics of Bacterial Infection at the Point of Care

Harshini Mukundan, Team Leader, Los Alamos National Laboratory

Pathogen biomarkers secreted in host during the course of infection can prove to be accurate a reliable signatures for diagnostics. However, many of these biomarkers are lipidated sugars which are not readily measured in blood due to their biochemical properties using conventional detection methods. Our team has developed a suite of patented methods for the rapid detection of such signatures, and demonstrated feasibility of application in diagnosis of infection associated with gram-positive, negative and indeterminate pathogens in blinded clinical samples. For this, we have also used novel sensor technology developed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Our technologies are now on the verge of market development, and transition plans are being developed and executed to ensure commercial transition.
