Dong Pyo Kim's Biography

Dong Pyo Kim, Yonsan Chaired Professor, Pohang University of Science And Technology (POSTECH)

Prof. Dong-Pyo Kim is a professor of POSTECH Chemical Engineering department, and also a director of the National Creative Research Center for Intelligent Microprocess of Pharmaceutical Synthesis. He obtained Ph.D. in chemistry at Temple University in 1991, then post-doctoral research in University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Materials Science & Engineering), and joined Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology as a senior researcher. Prior to POSTECH at 2012, he had worked in Applied Chemistry at Chungnam Nat. University for 17 years. His microfluidic research has been rooted at materials chemistry of silicon-based resin (preceramic polymers, sol-gel). Since 2004, he has devoted to a microreaction field, covering the reactor design, fabrication as well as continuous-flow syntheses in organics, polymers and nanomaterials, currently focusing at scale-up microreactor for production of API and drug delivery systems.

Throughout a long endeavor, he published at journal Science (2016). The chip microreactor embedded with rapid mixing design enabled to handle a life time of highly unstable lithiated intermediates in the submillisecond range, which outpaced the rapid anionic Fries rearrangement and applied to the synthesis of a bioactive molecule.

He has published >250 peer-reviewed papers and 30 patents. He received Academic Excellence Award by Korean Chemical Society (2017), POSTECHIAN of the Year (2016, POSTECH), The Great Scientist Award (2016) and Best 100 Scientific Achievement (2014, 2007) by National Research Foundation. He was appointed as a Yonsan chaired professor by POSTECH at 2017.

Novel Microfluidic Platforms for Scale-Up Production and Autonomous Self-Optimization

Flow chemistry in the confined microfluidic space enables easy up-scaling production at precise controlled conditions. In the talk, we show the assembly of 16 numbering-up 3D printed metal microreactor to render high productivity up to 20 g for 10 min operation of subsecond ultrafast chemistry. And, hexagon-shaped 3D printed polymer module of photomicroreactor with solar concentrator leaded to facile assembly into serial and radial reconfiguration for high throughput of synthesis. In addition, for scalable production of emulsions, compact 3D printed droplet generator was devised by array of 40 drop-makers with a 3D void geometry and a flow distributor, producing microgels and microparticles. Finally, we explore ultrafast flow chemistry by autonomous self-optimizing platform that accelerates the optimization and screening of complex chemistry.
