Raf Reintjens's Biography

Raf Reintjens, Principal Scientist Process Intensification, InnoSyn

Raf Reintjens graduated in 1984 as a chemical engineer at the Technical University of Eindhoven. He started his career at DSM in process development of fine chemicals derived from hydrocyanic acid. As project manager for business development he was responsible for outsourcing pre-marketing production of newly developed processes to toll-manufacturing service providers. Leading a process development group, he gained experience in scaling-up and pilot plant operation. Experience with bulk chemical operation and large capital projects followed at the DSM toluene oxidation plant in Rotterdam. During this period, significant investments were made to improve the profitability of the site, which meant working closely with engineering, equipment manufacturers and contractors. From this bulk chemical production environment, he switched to competence management for Process Intensification. In that role he was responsible for the identification of promising PI technologies, the expertise development and roll out in business applications. During that period, he experienced what it took to bridge the gap between TRL3 and TRL7. His team introduced 3D metal printing as the game changing manufacturing technology for industrial micro reactors. In May 2017, when InnoSyn carved out, he left DSM to join his colleagues at InnoSyn.

The development of industrial micro reactors, encounters significant hurdles in minimizing the complexity originating from the numbering-up strategy, while achieving a performance cost ratio capable of competing with existing reactor technologies. Viable solutions were found in the combination of an adapted design strategy and a new manufacturing technology and will be discussed in this presentation.
