Michiel Vermeulen's Biography

Michiel Vermeulen, Professor, Radboud University

Michiel Vermeulen performed his doctoral work in the laboratory of Henk Stunnenberg at the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands. He then joined the lab of Matthias Mann in Munich, Germany, where he pioneered the application of quantitative mass spectrometry-based proteomics technology to identify interactions between nuclear proteins and modified histone tails. In 2009 he was appointed as assistant professor and in 2013 as associate professor at the University Medical Center Utrecht in The Netherlands, where he continued to use quantitative mass-spectrometry to study proteins that interact with chromatin (so-called chromatin readers). These readers are very important for mammalian development and they are often deregulated in cancer. The identification and characterization of chromatin readers and their protein complexes in stem cells and in cancer cells remains a major focus of the lab. In February 2014 Michiel Vermeulen was appointed as full professor at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. The group currently consists of 5 PhD students, 5 post-docs and 2 technicians. Awarded grants include NWO-VIDI (2009), NWO-Gravitation program (2013), an EU FP7 framework program grant 4DCellFate (2011) and an ERC starting grant (2012).

In his lecture, Michiel Vermeulen will present data on a recently identified and characterised chromatin 'reading' complex that is involved in breast cancer. This complex may be an interesting target for epigenetic drugs.
