Yong Zeng's Biography



Yong Zeng, Assistant Professor, University of Kansas

Yong Zeng received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Alberta, Canada in 2007, where he worked on the development of microfluidic technologies for nanomaterial self-assembly, biomolecular separation and proteomics under the supervision of Jed Harrison. He joined Richard Mathies’ laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley as a postdoctoral researcher. His research was focused on high-throughput single copy/cell analysis of early-stage carcinogenic mutations in leukemia and lymphoma using the microfluidic droplet digital PCR technology. In 2012, he started his independent career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Kansas in the Department of Chemistry with an affiliation with the Bioengineering Graduate Program. Working at the interface of chemistry and biology, a primary aim of his research program is to develop new enabling bioanalytical tools for quantitative biomolecule measurement in complex biological systems. His long-term interest is to translate the technology innovations into biomedical and clinical studies to facilitate the advance of cancer biology and diagnostics.

Microfluidics has emerged as a new paradigm in quantitative measurements of biomolecules and dynamic pathways across radically different spatiotemporal scales. In this presentation, I will share our research on developing microfluidics-based biotechnologies for quantitative analysis of cancer biomarkers, including bead-based digital PCR, actuatable microwell-patterned ELISA, and integrated microvesicle capture and analysis microsystem. Their applications to biomedical analyses of genetic mutations, protein biomarkers, and circulating exosomes derived from cancer patients will be discussed.
