Understanding the Importance of Extracellular Vesicles

Namrata Jain, Product Technical Specialist, Malvern Aimil Instruments Pvt Ltd

Extracellular vesicular bodies such as microvesicles and exosomes have major potential as biomarkers and are currently under intense investigation due to their apparently ubiquitous presence in a broad range of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. Exosomes, typically 30 - 100 nm, are powerful progenitors in altering target cell phenotypes, particularly in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. Knowing the size and concentration of exosomes in their natural environment is of significant value in elucidating the role of these structures in diseases and the ways in which they may be exploited for diagnostic or therapeutic applications. However, developments in this area are constrained by limitations in the technology available for their characterization. Malvern NanoSight Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA) system delivers the most versatile tool that offers the potential to rapidly enumerate and speciate such particles. Being proven in the detection and speciation of nanovesicles, NanoSight has a growing role in biodiagnostics as an analytical platform of choice.
