The National Food Crime Unit – Form and Function

Andy Morling, Head of the Food Crime Unit, Food Standards Agency UK

Food crime matters. As consumers of food we are disconnected by multiple processes and often thousands of miles from the origins of the food we eat. For this reason it is vital that we can be confident in the honesty and integrity of each and every person involved in bringing food from the farm to our fork. Although with us for hundreds of years, food crime has only very recently been recognised as a discrete criminal typology demanding its own bespoke law enforcement response. The public clamour is understandably for a quick fix to a problem it only recently realised it had. The gap between threat and response may take somewhat longer successfully to bridge. The National Food Crime Unit provides for the first time, a law enforcement capability dedicated to tackling the threat to consumers and businesses from food which is being dishonestly produced, manufactured or sold. By applying cutting edge law enforcement thinking the unit aims to ensure that there is no place for such criminality within UK food and drink supply chains.
