Trends and Perspectives within the Agro-food Immunodiagnostics

Francesco Fieramosca, Marketing Executive, Tecna

In the recent years an increase in food safety outbreaks has arisen; sometimes due to external factors, as climate change effect on mycotoxins incidence, some others due to deliberate adulteration as antibiotic misuse. To minimize the impact of such contaminations on people health and on the livestock and agro-food industries, a tight control of the food chain is necessary. Thanks to their reliability, sensitivity and precision, ELISAs are widespread tools for the detection of a number of contaminants in food and feedstuffs. ELISA kits are definitely cost-competitive and as shown by many proficiency tests results, their variability is even lower than that of confirmatory methods. Within this scenario, where more analysis are required at a lower cost, possibly with the same results reliability, the agro-food screening market is struggling to find solutions to perform multiple analysis. Some products are already on the market, but for different reasons such as costs, time, training and plasticity they have not yet been successful. Kit manufacturers need further efforts and in Tecna we are aware that this is just the beginning. Therefore we are already working on affordable and efficient technologies that can allow multiple contaminants detection in an industrial environment.
