Metabolomics of Nosocomial Infections in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Dipankar Ghosh, Assistant Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University

Hospital acquired nosocomial infections (HAI) are one of the most serious threat to public health worldwide. The infections are commonly associated with microbial biofilms on medical devices like central venous or urinary catheters and endotracheal tubes used on admitted patients. These biofilm infections are increasingly mediated by multiple drug resistant (MDR) bacteria and result high mortality especially in the ICUs. Early detection of these biofilms based HAI are critical for healthcare management. Accumulating evidences indicate that HAI biofilms produce specific metabolites that play roles in the pathology of HAI and may act as biomarkers. A metabolomics workflow for the identification and characterization using high throughput mass spectrometry is discussed.
