Single Cell-ICP-MS Methods Development for Rapid Tracking of Nanoparticles and Algaecide Uptakes by Yeast and Cyanobacteria

Honglan Shi, Research Professor, Missouri University of Science and Technology

Development of rapid and reliable analytical methods for studying the uptakes and toxicity of nanoparticles (NPs) in cells is very important, especially in the single cell level. Single cell (SC)-ICP-MS is an emerging technology for studying uptakes and cytotoxicity of nanomaterials in the single cell level. This presentation focused on development of high-throughput SC-ICP-MS methods and studying the efficiency of copper-based algaecide for controlling toxic algae blooms, as well as uptakes of silver NPs by yeast cell and cytotoxicity. The cell concentration, element mass in each cell, mass distribution in cells, and extracellular metal concentration were all obtained in a short time. The developed novel methodologies are expected to have potential broad applications for rapid monitoring of NPs and cytotoxicity of other cells and materials at the single-cell level and for monitoring NP applications in drug delivery and other fields.
