Application of Axol Human iPS Cell-derived Cells for Drug Screening in a Dish

Tristan Thwaites, Business Development & Product Specialist, Axol Bioscience Ltd

Human cell-based disease models are becoming key tools for biomedical research, especially for disease and drug mechanism studies. However, obtaining, isolating and expanding relevant human cell types in the lab can be a difficult and laborious process. These hurdles have to be overcome in order to generate robust and reproducible cell-based models for testing new drug targets in the neurobiology field. To address these difficulties, Axol has developed a proprietary stem cell technology to produce ready to use, high quality cells from induced pluripotent stem cells. Axol can produce a variety of cells including neural cells, endothelial cells and cardiomyocytes at industrial quantity from any individual. For neural cells, this includes patients afflicted with brain diseases thus providing an affordable and easily accessible platform for developing human cellular models of neurological diseases. These robust cellular models provide a powerful tool for drug discovery to identify new drugs that show efficacy on disease-relevant cell types. Furthermore they can be used to complement existing animal models in drug discovery as well as toxicity testing.
