Optimization of bismaleimide synthesis via microfluidics
Sabrina Torres, Scientist III, Honeywell FM&T

The National Security Campus has recently undergone a paradigm shift in manufacturing focusing on more flexible production while maintaining quality material. Among the various advanced manufacturing methods, microfluidics and microreactor technology is being investigated for replacing batch type reactors on several of the chemical production processes in the plant. Initially, the focus was on developing a method for the continuous production of peroxides for use as reaction initiators. More recent efforts have moved toward developing a method to efficiently produce bismaleimide (BMI) materials used in removable epoxy foams applications. This presentation will focus on the optimization of BMI production in a continuous flow format and the complications of such a method.
