Rapid CRP detection using a paper microfluidic chip
Jiandong Wu, Postdoc, University of Manitoba

Chronic major organ disease such as chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant healthcare problem worldwide. However, traditional diagnostic methods are expensive and time-consuming, which is ill-suited for point-of-care (PoC) testing. Microfluidic paper-based analytical device (µPAD) offers significant advantages in low-cost, easy fabrication and biomedical assay operation. Here, we demonstrated a paper-based microfluidic immunoassay for rapid and low-cost C-reactive protein (CRP) detection. CRP was selected for this initial development as it is a strong biomarker of prognosis in chronic heart and kidney disease. Furthermore, we hypothesized that novel data mining tool such as principal component analysis (PCA) could help to better classify the diseases from clinical measurements and we tested this hypothesis using the collected CKD data.
