Around the World Synthesis: Harnessing the Cloud for Organic Chemistry
Daniel Fitzpatrick , Researcher, Ley Group, University of Cambridge
Cloud computing has revolutionised our day-to-day lives, changing the way we communicate, consume media and news, find information and even buy groceries. Science hasn't been left untouched by the rapid changes in this area, for example with journal search engines playing a crucial role in the dissemination of knowledge. How can we harness such developments for organic synthesis? In this presentation, research from the Ley Group at the intersection of chemistry, engineering and computer science will be highlighted and its potential to change the way chemists work at the bench will be discussed. Practical examples of cloud-based API synthesis will be included and potential future application areas will be presented. A real-time live demonstration of a cloud-based system will also be shown in which laboratory equipment based in Cambridge, UK will be controlled remotely with a server located in Japan.
