Abstract

Electro-organic Synthesis: Metal- and Reagent-free

Siegfried Waldvogel, Professor, Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz

The use of electricity as reagent has many benefits for the generation of value-added chemicals since no reagent waste formed and alternative reaction pathways can be exploited. The talk will deal with two different concepts to tackle electro-conversions: Innovative electrode materials: Cyclopropane derivatives are key intermediates in the synthesis of different drug compounds. Therefore, an effective, inexpensive and sustainable synthesis for these derivatives was established by using a new and stable cathode material. Innovative electrolytes: The direct electrolysis for dehydrogenative C,C bond formation represents a reagent- and metal-free cross-coupling. From relative simple starting materials phenol-arene and phenol-phenol coupling was achieved. It turns out that this electro-organic method is scalable and superior to peroxide based conversions. This concept can be even applied to the formation of N,N bonds.
