Frieder Scheller's Biography

Frieder Scheller, Professor, University of Potsdam

Frieder W. Scheller has been Professor of Analytical Biochemistry at the University of Potsdam since 1993. He received his diploma in chemistry from the Technical College of Merseburg and his PhD from the Humboldt University of Berlin. For many years he headed the Department of Bioelectrochemistry/Biosensors at the Central Institute of Molecular Biology of the German Academy of Sciences, Berlin-Buch. In 2001 and 2002 he was Vice-President of the German Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He was Vice-President of the University of Potsdam from 2004 to 2007. His current research interests include biomimetic sensors based on aptamers and molecularly imprinted polymers; enzyme electrochemistry of c-type cytochromes, cytochrome P-450 and haemoglobin; piezoelectric affinity sensors using antibodies, aptamers and enzymes respectively.

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have the potential to substitute antibodies and enzymes as recognition elements in bioanalysis. They are stable at high temperatures and even in organic solvents. In the talk biomimetic sensors based on MIPs for the determination of drugs, antibiotics, sugars but also for enzymes and protein binders will be presented.
