Biswanath Mazumdar's Biography



Biswanath Mazumdar, Senior Vice President(Technical) , Ceres Beeja Research Pvt.Ltd.

Dr. Biswanath Mazumdar by training is an Agronomist. He did is graduation and Ph.D, from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya and Masters from Calcutta University. He worked in different spheres as Farm Manager, Scientist in Agriculture University in Odhisa. He also worked in the rank of Deputy Director in Government undertaking organization at West Bengal. After twelve years of service he joined Bejo Sheetal Seeds Pvt. Ltd., Jalna, Maharashtra and worked for 18 years. Presently he is associated with B.P.Poddar group of Kolkata as Sr. Vice President in their seed company Ceres Beeja Research Pvt. Ltd. He is the pioneer worker of True Potato Seeds in private seed sector in India. He also received training from Ghent University, Belgium for breeding technique and International Bio Safety from Michigan State University, USA. He is an experienced person in regulatory and Bio Safety of GM crops with special reference to Bt Brinjal.
Due to his outstanding work he received award of Best potato entrepreneur in Global Potato conference held in the month of December 2009 at New Delhi. He also received best poster award on Bt Brinjal in South East Asia Vegetable Symposium held at Chaing Mai, Thailand in January 2012. He also contributed a valuable chapter In Handbook of Vegetables published from USA.

This presentation will discuss the development of Cry1Fa1 gene at NRCPB, Indian Agricultural Research Institute to control Brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) effectively. Further, it will also highlight how the Bt technology was commercialized in Brinjal by private sector along with development of LOD at 0.01%, insect bio-assay and Bt protein expression in plant. Bio-safety studies showed that cry1 Fa1 pure protein has no effect on mammals, on beneficial insects, sucking pests and soil ecosystem. In case of agronomic traits Bt Brinjal are significantly higher than non Bt counterpart or check.
