Malali Gowda's Biography

Malali Gowda, Director, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms

Dr. Malali Gowda, Director of Next-Generation Genomic Facility at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), NCBS-GKVK Campus, Bangalore. Dr. Malali Gowda had returned to India in September 2010 through the Ramalingaswamy program (Dept. of Biotechnology, Govt. of India). Dr. Gowda has a substantial experience in plant sciences, genetics, genomics and functional genomics from Michigan State University, North Carolina State University and Ohio State University. With his prior experience in genomics and functional genomics, Dr. Gowda has successfully established the state-of-the-art Next-Generation Genomic Facility (NGGF) at C-CAMP. In the last year, more than 150 institutes and industries across India have accessed NGGF facility services (NGS and bioinformatics). Scientists have sequenced >500 genomes (prokaryotes and higher eukaryotes) using NGGF services. Users have published several peer-reviewed journals (http://ccamp.res.in/NGG%20papers) using NGGF and many of the genomes/transcriptomes have been deposited in NCBI.

This talk will highlight the role of NGS Technologies in generating High Quality rice genome assembly and annotation. Initially, it will present the deep sequence of first indica cultivar, HR12 and assembly of HR12 genome using combination of Illumina’s short reads and PacBio long reads which improves the quality of HR12 assembly and annotation. Finally, it will discuss how HR12 genomic resources (assembly, annotated genes, repeats, variants etc) from this study will accelerate rice improvement programs in India and beyond.
