Endang Septiningsih's Biography

Endang Septiningsih, Assistant Professor, Texas A&M University

Endang Septiningsih (“Septi”) was a former Senior Scientist/Molecular Geneticist for flooding stress tolerant rice at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Los Banos, Philippines. Her task was to lead a research team to study genetics underlying different types of flooding scenarios and to generate pre-breeding material for flood-prone regions. Her research focus areas were flooding during germination conditions or anaerobic germination (AG)—an important trait for direct-seeded rice, complete submergence or flash flooding during vegetative stage, and stagnant or medium deep flooding where water up to ~50 cm can remain until harvest time. In August 2015, Septi joined the Soil and Crop Sciences Department, Texas A&M University, as a new faculty member. She will continue to work on different aspects of rice genetics and genomics in her new work place. In addition, she would like also to explore to do research with several new crops of importance in Texas.

Poor crop establishment in direct-seeded rice is improved by anaerobic germination (AG) tolerance. Here, we identify AG1 as the genetic determinant in qAG-9-2, a major QTL for AG tolerance. This gene enhances AG tolerance through modulation of sink strength.
