Anitha Ayyappan Pillai's Biography



Anitha Ayyappan Pillai, Associate Professor, Institute for Communicative and Cognitive Neurosciences

Dr. Anitha Ayyappan Pillai did her Ph.D. at Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Trivandrum, Kerala, where she specialized in Population Genetics. After completing her Ph.D. in 2003, she worked as a Postdoctoral fellow and then as an Assistant Professor at Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, Japan for 10 years. At present, she is working as an Associate Professor at Institute for Communicative and Cognitive Neurosciences (ICCONS), Shoranur, Kerala. Her main research area is Neurogenetics. She is primarily engaged in molecular and genetic studies of complex neurological disorders such as autism. She has received several research grants from national and international funding agencies in India and Japan. She has authored >30 scientific papers in leading international journals in this field, and has co-authored book chapters.

In this talk, the role & expression of miRNAs in the human brain and their dysfunction during Autism will be discussed. It will also discuss how miRNA-based therapeutics holds a great potential for genetically complex disorders such as autism.
