Assoc Prof Wong earned his medical degree at the National University of Singapore in 1989 and is now a Senior Consultant subspecialising in interventional cardiology at the National Heart Centre Singapore. He maintains a busy practice and performs more than 200 coronary artery stenting procedures a year and attends to more than 2000 cardiovascular patients annually. Prof Wong was trained and completed his interventional fellowship from 1999-2001 at the Massachusetts General Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard University in Boston, USA.
Prof Wong has strong interests in basic and translational cardiovascular research and is currently Director of the R & D Unit (RDU) of the National Heart Centre. The unit with 25 staff has state of the art research laboratories and specializes in bringing innovative basic research to both patients and clinicians. His own special interests are cellular therapeutics for cardiac repair using stem cells as well as developing minimally invasive techniques for transplantation of these cells. He has interests in innovative materials for cardiovascular devices and scaffolds in tissue engineering.
