Jürgen obtained his diploma and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry from the Free University in West-Berlin. Following postdoctoral studies at Biosym Technologies in San Diego he joined Bristol-Myers Squibb and spent seven years at the BMS Pharmaceutical Research Institute in Seattle. After leaving BMS he joined MDS Pharma in the Seattle area and was involved in starting a biotech company that ultimately became the AMRI Bothell Research Center. In 1995, Jürgen was appointed Affiliate Associate and later Full Professor of Biological Structure at the University of Washington. In 2004, he was appointed Full Professor and Chair of Life Science Informatics at the University of Bonn. He also continues to be an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington. His current research activities include the development and application of methods for computational chemical biology, compound data mining, large-scale SAR analysis, and SAR visualization. Jürgen has published approx. 400 scientific articles and edited four books. He is co-inventor on 25 issued pharmaceutical patents, serves on more than 10 editorial and scientific advisory boards, and is an editor of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
