Extracellular vesicles released by these tumors provide a means to analyze the mutant RNA, including mutant IDH1 and EGFR, within the tumors by sampling serum/plasma and cerebral spinal fluid. These biomarkers can provide insights into the mutations driving the tumor and the response of patients to therapy, including concomitant changes in the mutation levels and profiles. These tumor vesicles are also thought to be used by gliomas to modify normal cells in their environment through extracellular delivery of RNA and proteins. Our work supports transfer of miRNA via tumor vesicles to microglia thereby participating in a change in their phenotype. |
