Ben Sykes's Biography



Ben Sykes, Senior Business Interface Manager (Pharmaceuticals/BRIC, BBSRC

Ben Sykes is a Senior Business Interface Manager within the Business Interaction Unit (BIU) at BBSRC, a position he has held since February 2011. His role covers responsibility for preparing and implementing BBSRC’s strategy for engagement with the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, in addition to overseeing the management of the Bioprocessing Research Industry Club (BRIC) and the Chemical Biology Networks.
Prior to his current role, he spent 5 years directing the UK National Stem Cell Network (UKNSCN), following on from 12 years spent in research programme management and policy with the BBSRC. His technical background is in biological sciences, holding an honours degree in Applied Biology from Nottingham Trent University, and he is a Member of the Society of Biology. He was born in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

The UK Government recognises the importance of academic research in bioprocessing and often views it in the context of the development of new products or technologies for the pharmaceutical industry. As a result, funding schemes aimed specifically at bioprocessing usually attempt to underpin industrial needs. This presentation will highlight the most relevant funding schemes and also other more general opportunities that academics in this area can pursue.
