Alexander Seifalian's Biography



Alexander Seifalian, Professor, University College London

Alexander Marcus Seifalian is a Professor of Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine, and director of Director of UCL Centre for Nanotechnology & Regenerative Medicine at University College London (UCL-CNRM). He completed his education at University of London and University College London Medical School. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Nanotechnology (FIoN) and Fellow of Society of Biology (FSB), and has published over 310 peer-reviewed research papers, 35 book chapter contributions and 4 families’ International patents. He has assembled and worked within a multidisciplinary research group as shown from his successful publication and grant track record. He established the UCL-CNRM in 2004 to provide functional interactions between teams of biologists, physicists, materials scientists, engineers, and clinicians, which are further strengthened by collaboration with UK and overseas universities as well as industry. The centre is equipped with “state-of-the-art” facilities including a advanced biomaterials synthesis laboratory housed within a GMP environment, five tissue culture laboratories, two nanoparticle and surface characterisation laboratories equipped with the latest nanospraying technologies including ultrasound atomisation and electrodynamic spraying techniques, and a laboratory for manufacturing 3D scaffolds. He was awarded the top prize in the field for development of nanomaterials and technologies for cardiovascular implants in 2007 by Medical Future Innovation, and in 2009 received a Business Innovation Award from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) in the Life Sciences and Healthcare category.

Biocompatible nanocomposite materials with surface nanotopography as well as nanoparticles including fluorescence nanoparticles “quantum dots”, silver nanoparticles and others have been instrumental in development of organs as 3D scaffold and stem cells.
