Dr. Walt Gall is an executive entrepreneur who has been an integral team leader growing diverse technology start-up companies, ranging from the healthcare and biotech/pharma industry to software firms in mobile commerce and advanced analytics. He is currently VP of Healthcare and Strategic Partnerships for the leading cognitive computing firm Saffron Technology, driving sales and business development activities in consumer-facing sectors such as healthcare, insurance, and financial services. Prior to Saffron, Dr. Gall’s experience has ranged from leading systems biology R&D, product commercialization, and business development activities with technology enterprises. At BD, he teamed with technology and business development executives to build go-to-market plans for emerging software-based technology platform and medical device products. From BD, he joined leading metabolomics diagnostic company Metabolon where he led the global R&D, business development, and commercialization activities for its first flagship cardio-metabolic diagnostic product franchise, QuantoseTM, the first commercially available insulin resistance diagnostic, and related products. Dr. Gall then became managing principal of his own executive advisory consulting firm, partnering with a venture capital/private equity firm and a network of high net worth investors managing a portfolio of early stage private and public tech and biotech enterprises, with focused execution on equity financing, strategic planning, and corporate development. Dr. Gall received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University and carried out postdoctoral fellowship studies at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Integrated care is a concept bringing together inputs, delivery, management, and organization of services related to diagnosis, treatment, care, rehabilitation, and health promotion. Increasingly, technology – and in particular cognitive computing – plays a central role in making sense of the myriad, often conflicting, always overwhelming data. In this presentation, the perspective of integrated care within a global healthcare company will be presented along with the challenge of incorporating data of interest into its decision-making. In particular, the challenge of discovery will be called out. One technology innovator, with examples from industry, will describe how cognitive computing has been applied successfully to similar problems, and where wearable device data could provide still more insight.
