The mechanism of action can involve trophic-mediated neuroprotection of host photoreceptors or integration into the host retina and differentiation into retinal cell types such as photoreceptors. Much work has been done to distinguish the RPC as a significant therapeutic candidate. The ongoing project extends this work to the GMP production of human RPCs, formal IND-enabling preclinical studies and early clinical trials. There is much to recommend this approach, including simplicity, safety, and particularly the potential for cell-mediated efficacy in currently untreatable blinding diseases. |
