Joseph Purita, Medical Director of Stem Cell Centers of America, Institute Of Regenerative and Molecular Orthopedics

Dr. Purita is currently director of Institute of Regenerative and Molecular Orthopedics (www.stemcellorthopedic.com) in Boca Raton, Florida. The Institute specializes in the use of Stem Cells and Platelet Rich Plasma injections for use in sports medicine and other musculoskeletal conditions. Dr. Purita is a pioneer in the use of Stem Cells and Platelet Rich Plasma for a variety of orthopedic conditions which previously required surgery. The Institute has treated some of the most prominent professional athletes from all major sports in both the U.S.A. and abroad. He received a B.S. degree from Georgetown Univ in 1972. He received his M.D. degree from Georgetown Univ. in 1976. Orthopedic residency was completed at the Univ. of Miami. Dr. Purita is board certified in Orthopedics by ABOS. He is a Fellow American College of Surgeons, Fellow American Academy Orthopedic Surgeons, and a Fellow American Academy of Pain Management. He is also certified in Age Management Medicine. He has consistently been named a top doctor by prestigious Castle Connolly and U.S. News and World Report. He is licensed to practice medicine in multiple states and countries. He has lectured and taught extensively throughout the world on the use of Stem Cells and Platelet Rich Plasma for musculoskeletal conditions. He has been instrumental in helping other countries in the world establish guidelines for the use of Stem Cells in their countries. He has been invited to lecture on these techniques throughout the world as a visiting professor. His lectures have been in many different settings and have been for CME credit both in the USA and abroad. Dr. Purita and his work have been profiled on ESPN, CNN, NYT, WSJ, S.I. and numerous other periodicals. He has also published in the United States and Abroad. These publications include chapters in the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine Volumes XII, XIV, XV, and XVI. He has also published in the Korean Stem Cell Society Journal. He currently has a book underway on Regenerative Medicine as it pertains to Stem Cells. He is also a member of the Teaching Facility of the American Academy of Ant-Aging Medicine Stem Cell Fellowship. He also acts as a consultant for a number of companies in the Stem Cell Industry. Dr. Purita’s institute acts as a magnet for physicians and academic people from all over the world to learn about Stem Cell and Platelet Rich Plasma treatments.

The presentation concerns the use of PRP and Stem cell injections for treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.  Our clinic has made extensive use of Platelet Rich Plasma in conjunction with Bone Marrow Stem Cells (BMAC) and Adipose Stem Cells (SVF) and fat grafts.  All of these components are harvested from the patient, minimally manipulated, and utilized the same day. Indications are given as to which type of cell and technique to use to accomplish repair.  For instance stem cells, both bone marrow derived (BMAC) and fat stem cells, are typically used for the more difficult problems such as osteoarthritis of the joints.  While PRP injections are utilized for the less severe tendon problems.  Discussed are the indications of when to use Stem Cells verses PRP alone.
The newest concepts in stem cell regenerative science are presented. Important basic science aspects of both PRP and stem cell preparations are discussed.  This presentation defines what constitutes a clinically effective PRP product including proper numbers of growth factors, Platelets, CD-34 stem cells and WBCs which play a significant role in the production of SDF-1a and SCF which are two growth factors which allow stem cells to migrate (homing) to areas of injury.  Some new cutting edge concepts are also presented including Exosomes and their use.  A onetime thought to be cellular debris, Exosomes are now poised to significantly change our concepts of stem cells from which they are produced. They are important vehicles for the transportation of growth factors.  Further discussion centers on the clinical use of recombinant cytokines and interleukins to make up for deficiencies in the incipient PRP and Stem cell products.  Finally discussion concerns the use of Blastomere Like Stem Cells which are found in many portions of the body and are thought to be totipotent.
