Manohar Furtado Ph.D. completed his Ph.D. at Pune University in India followed by and an NIH funded post-doctoral fellowship in Molecular Virology at the Department of Microbiology, Northwestern University Medical School (NUMS). He joined the faculty at NUMS as an Assistant Professor in Infectious Diseases and Pathology and served as a Principal Investigator at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at NUMS and as the Director of Clinical Virology and Retrovirology Laboratories. Major areas of investigative research included the study of mechanisms of cancer and HIV-1 pathogenicity. Dr. Furtado joined Applied Biosystems/Life Technologies in May 2000 and built up business units that developed product lines for Genome wide gene expression and SNP analysis in humans & model organisms, Molecular Diagnostics & Precision Medicine applications, Bio-threat detection, DNA based Crime Scene Investigations, Animal Diagnostics, Public Health & Safety, Food Safety Testing and Quality Assurance in Pharmaceutical manufacturing. He has launched products in the regulated markets that conform to regulations & guidelines dictated by the FDA, AOAC, SWGDAM, ICH & the USDA. He has worked on several committees at the CLSI, CDC and ATCC to define guidelines and standards for NGS applications, Sequencing formats and molecular Dx testing. He served as the Vice –President for R & D at Life Technologies/Applied Biosystems from 2008-2012. In 2012, he started Biology for Global Good LLC, a consultation service for Biotech & pharmaceutical companies and works with several companies to help define technology applications and business development. He has over 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has made over 250 presentations to scientific conferences. He has obtained funding from several organizations to work on cancer and HIV-1 related research and has been a reviewer for several journals. He was appointed to the National Biodefense Science Board, an advisory group for DHHS, in 2012.
