Bhushan Patwardhan's Biography

Bhushan Patwardhan, Professor & Director- ISHS, University of Pune

Professor Bhushan Patwardhan has over 20 years experience in academic and education governance at many Universities and institutions. His teaching and research has been in subjects like biochemistry, pharmaceutical biology, natural product drug discovery, ethnopharmacology, Ayurveda, traditional medicine, nutrition and environmental health. He has over 30 year experience in research and development in the area of evidence based Ayurveda, ethnopharmacology, drug discovery & development and integrative medicine. He is a Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) and visiting Professor at IIAS, Shimla. He is present Chairman of APDC of NIPER. He is on research advisory committees of several national institutions including ICMR RMRC Belgaum, CSIR NBRI Lucknow and TIFAC CoRE in Pharmacogenomics at Manipal University. He is Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine and is on several Editorial Boards.

He has been on important national committees of the UGC, CSIR, DST and Boards of several Universities; member Taskforces of National Knowledge Commission and Planning Commission; Consultant to WHO Geneva and SEARO. He has worked as Chief of Academics with Manipal Education Group, Director of Institute of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, Bengalore and also was Vice Chancellor of Symbiosis International University.

He is recipient of many awards and orations including Sir Ram Nath Chopra Oration, Waldemar Haffkine Oration, Dr C. Dwarkanath Oration, Dr P.K. Devi Oration, KLE University Oration, Dr P M Mehta Oration. He is recipient of Shri Gopaldas Parikh Award 2015, Harihar Mukherjee Memorial Award 2015, Parkhe Award, and Dewang Mehta Award.

He has attracted substantial research funding from national and international agencies. He has authored many books and chapters with reputed publishers including Elsevier, Academic Press and Wiley. His recent scholarly book ‘Integrative Approaches for Health’ published by Academic Press Elsevier has received excellent reviews. He has guided 19 PhD students, 8 Indian Patents, 2 US Patents and over 120 research publications with Scholar h-Index 37, i10-index 70 and over 4980 citations.

He is very eloquent speaker and has travelled extensively in India and abroad to give over 200 keynotes, plenary talks and orations at many national and international bodies including ACS, ACR, UCLA, UIC, Johns Hopkins,INSA, IPS, IPC among many others.
