Chelliah Jayabaskaran's Biography

Chelliah Jayabaskaran, Professor, Indian Institute of Science

Dr. C. Jayabaskaran received his Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, in 1981. He joined the department of Bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the year 1982 as a post-doctoral fellow. In the year 1984, he moved to Boston Biomedical Research Institute as a staff fellow. He also worked at the Institute De Biologie Moleculaire des plantes du, LNRS, Strasburg, France and Max-Planck-Institute fur Molekulare Genetik, berlin, Germany as a visiting scientist. Presently, he is a professor of Biochemistry, Indian Institute of Science. He is the author or co-author of more than 50 publications. During his career, Jayabaskaran has received several honours, including Jawaharlal Nehru award, in recognition for Ph.D degree research work by ICAR, New Delhi, INSA Research Fellowship, France Government fellowship and Max – Planck – Scientific fellowship. He has guided 15 Ph.D students and more than 20 post-doctoral fellows over the last 28 years. His main research interests are to investigate the bioactive properties of secondary metabolites produced by endophytic fungi isolated from medicinal plants, such as anti-cancer anti-thrombotic activities. His interests are also to characterize the secondary metabolite biosynthetic genes in a view to metabolically engineer the production of these metabolites.
