5-aza-2´-deoxycytidine is an inhibitor of DNA methylation, a mutagen, an epimutagen, a carcinogen, an inducer of fragile sites and a chemotherapeutic agent. Each of these functions can be replaced in human cells by 2´-deoxyriboguanylurea: its the primary breakdown product.
