Victor Levenson's Biography

Victor Levenson, Associate Professor, Rush University Medical Center

Dr. Victor V. Levenson is an Associate Professor at Rush University Medical Center (Chicago, IL). Dr. Levenson received his MD from the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute and his PhD in cellular and molecular biology from the Institute of Molecular Biology (Moscow, USSR). He has been on faculty at University of Illinois at Chicago and Northwestern University (Chicago, IL). Dr. Levenson’s pioneering work in DNA methylation-based biomarkers in blood has been recognized in peer-reviewed papers, reviews, and book chapters. His laboratory has developed a unique technique for deep methylation analysis in cell-free circulating DNA and other specimens with ultra-small DNA content. This technique (MethDet) is currently used to develop and validate biomarkers for screening, prediction and prognosis, and treatment monitoring.

Using our MethDet technology for methylome analysis in very small samples for proof-of-principle studies, we established the feasibility of methylation biomarkers for disease detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of treatment. The modified technology allows analysis of methylation events on a genome-wide scale using cell-free DNA from blood. Development and validation of the first clinical-grade biomarker will be presented.
