Senthil Sundaram's Biography

Senthil Sundaram, Associate Professor, Wayne State University

Dr. Senthil Sundaram obtained his MD from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). In 2005, he joined Wayne State University as an assistant professor to investigate childhood brain diseases such as mental retardation, autism, epilepsy and Tourette Syndrome. Dr. Sundaram currently leads a major National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded research program to investigate developmentally delayed children using neuroimaging and netxgen sequenicng methods. This work has resulted in the identification of new imaging and genomic biomarkers. Dr. Sundaram was also the first to conduct a genome-wide copy number variation analysis in Tourette Syndrome in which he discovered several novel genetic causes of Tourette Syndrome. This work was published in the prestigious journal Neurology and was highlighted by an editorial in the same issue of the journal. In addition, he also published the first whole exome sequencing study of Tourette Syndrome in the top-ranked journal Annals of Neurology. His long term goal is to translate the advances in genomic research into clinical practice.
