Stephen Brown's Biography

Stephen Brown, RNAi Facility Screening Manager, Sheffield University

Dr. Stephen Brown manages the UK Drosophila RNAi screening facility, at the University of Sheffield (SRSF). He did his PhD at the University of Nottingham in plants on co-suppression (before the phenomenon was known in animals as RNAi). He then spent 7 years as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge, experiencing genomics and developmental genetics in Drosophila, working in the Departments of Zoology and Pathology. Prior to his role at the SRSF he held a MRC Career Development Fellowship, at the University of Manchester, lecturing in animal developmental biology, evolution and cell biology. Dr. Brown has been guest editor of Seminars in Cell and Developmental Biology and has published a number of highly cited research papers and reviews. He has supported ~50 Drosophila and Human RNAi library screens for both UK and international scientists. His current role is to teach assay design, imaging, statistics, robotics and high throughput screening to users of the facility as well as to advance techniques in high throughput technology. Dr. Brown is a co-organiser of the UK RNAi and Functional Genomics Screening Conference (London) and Phenotyping of Stem Cells Meeting (Sheffield).
