The alpha2* nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), the most sparsely expressed nAChR subtype in the brain, is uniquely expressed in GABAergic interneurons in the hippocampus. This receptor subtype has emerged as a potential new therapeutic target for memory enhancement.
