Philip Drake,
Senior Researcher,
ITRI
Philip is a senior researcher working for the Biomedical Technology and Device Research lab (BDL) part of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan. A chemist by training with a PhD in polymer chemistry and chemical sensors from the University of Bath, UK, he has also worked for DERA and QinetiQ in the UK. For the last 10 years Philip has been based in ITRI, Taiwan, developing biomedical devices with a major focus on point-of-care diagnostics. During this time the group in ITRI has spun-out several technologies and has a strong recorded in both industrial and academic collaboration. He has extensive experience in material chemistry and nanotechnology and its application towards chemical sensors and bioassays, and have several years experience leading projects for a multidisciplinary team of scientists in the area of medical device development. This includes conventional immunoassay work as well as more innovative applications such as acoustic wave based sensors, electronic nose systems for disease diagnosis and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) based detection methods. Currently he is working in the area of SERS based systems for DNA and pathogen detection.
