Jim Sirkis's Biography

Jim Sirkis, Chief Technology Officer, IDEX Health & Science

Jim Sirkis has been engaged in technology and product development for more than three decades. He began his career as a Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, focusing on photonic and fiber optic methods of thermomechanical measurements. In 2000, Jim joined CiDRA where he served as Vice President of Network and Instrumentation Products. He was then a part of a team that spun out CyVera, serving as Vice President of Product Development. CyVera developed a genetic bioassay platform, and was ultimately acquired by Illumina. After serving as Vice President of Product Development for the CyVera Division of Illumina, Jim became founder and President of CiDRA Precision Services, a company focused on developing microfluidic devices for life sciences markets. After CiDRA Precision Services was acquired by IDEX Health and Science (IH&S), Jim became the Chief Technology with technology responsibility across all IH&S business units. An avid Gator, Jim earned his Ph.D. in Engineering Science and Mechanics from the University of Florida. Jim has authored numerous publications and patents spanning optics, mechanics, devices and instrumentation.

The development and successful commercialization of a microfluidic consumable relies upon a complex balance of design, performance, and economic tradeoffs.  Instrument and consumable specifications must be matched to achieve assay goals and designed to address new advances in end user workflows.  Jim Sirkis, Ph.D., is the CTO for IDEX Health & Science. He has many years of experience researching, developing, and manufacturing some of the most successful integrated microfluidic consumables platforms in today’s life sciences market.  Dr. Sirkis will review system-level challenges ranging from fluorescence dye selection to considerations in molding microfluidic components. He will also cover a myriad of other decision-related topics along the development cycle. In the rapidly evolving world of microfluidic consumables, an intelligent and informed approach to design, manufacturability, and product fulfillment will ensure that all aspects of a system’s development are aimed at achieving commercial success.
