Stephanie Buryk-Iggers's Biography

Stephanie Buryk-Iggers, Researcher, Ryerson University

Stephanie is currently completing her Masters of Applied Science in Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University, affiliated with the Li Knowledge Institute and Keenan Research Centre of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada. Her current research is based on a microfluidic platform that utilizes diamagnetism for the precise control of cell-containing biocompatible droplets. Prior to joining Ryerson University, Stephanie worked for an international humanitarian organization committed to improving the health of individuals in the most underdeveloped regions of the world. Stephanie obtained her B.A in Communications from McMaster University (2007), and her B.Sc in Biology from Trent University (2016). With a robust background in communications and science, Stephanie is committed to the effective translation of science and knowledge into understanding, learning, and ultimately for improving global health.

We present a microfluidic platform that is capable of controlled diamagnetic droplet displacement.  In this method, monodisperse aqueous droplets are produced in a continuous phase of hydrophobic ferrofluid. Both phases are exposed to magnetic field.  Precise deflection of the aqueous droplets is then achieved in a single step by adjusting the flow-rate of the disperse phase.
