Sudhir Kumar's Biography

Sudhir Kumar, Professor, Arizona State University

Sudhir Kumar, Ph.D., is a Regents’ and Foundation Professor in the School of Life Sciences, Arizona State University (Tempe, USA). He also directs the Center for Evolutionary Medicine and Informatics in the Biodesign Institute. He has published over 135 research articles in molecular phylogenetics, phylomedicine, and evolutionary bioinformatics. He has been a major architect of the MEGA (Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis) software and TimeTree database of molecular divergence times. He has also co-authored two books: Molecular Evolution and Phylogenetics [2000] and The TimeTree of Life [2009]. He received an Innovation Award in Functional Genomics from the Burroughs-Wellcome Fund (2000) and is a fellow of AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2009). He is currently the President of the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution (SMBE) and serving as the Editor-in-Chief of its journal Molecular Biology and Evolution. He holds degrees in Genetics (doctoral), Biology (masters) and Engineering (bachelors).
