Charandeep Singh, PhD Student, Luxembourg Center for Systems Biomedicine

I am currently pursuing my PhD at Luxembourg center for systems biomedicine, Luxembourg, in the ‘Enzymology and Metabolism’ group. My PhD project is to find new enzyme activities from the protein of unknown function in yeast, with a potential link to human disease(s). I use bioinformatics tools as a starting point to find the interesting candidates. Once, the in silico role has been predicted, I use combination of different approaches like LC-MS, recombinant protein production and purification, enzyme assays, to study in depth, the role of the proteins in yeast cells and human cell lines. I also use stable isotopes to study the potential pathways involving the new enzyme activities. So far in my PhD, I have setup an untargeted metabolite profiling LC-MS platform (Q-Exactive) in our group and also been able to use this platform to find a new enzyme in yeast/human cells and the underlying pathway in yeast/human cells.

Before starting my PhD, I completed M.Sc in Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Birmingham (2010-2011). I completed my Bachelor’s education in India and successfully obtained Bachelor’s of Engineering in Biotechnology from MAIET, Rajasthan, India. I love to work in interdisciplinary teams.

My expertise includes LC-MS method development for metabolites/proteins, univariate/multivariate statistics, recombinant protein production and purification, cell culture, enzymology, stable isotopic labeling of metabolites and using metabolomics to uncover new biochemical pathways. I also teach biostatistics to Bachelor’s student at the University.
