J C T Eijkel's Biography

J C T Eijkel, Professor, University Of Twente

Jan Eijkel is professor Nanofluidics for Lab on a Chip Applications in the BIOS/Lab on a Chip group at the University of Twente. The group forms part of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology. Jan studied pharmacy at the University of Amsterdam. After this he became a public pharmacist while studying theology at the University of Utrecht. He then went to the University of Twente doing a Ph.D. in biosensor research in the group of Piet Bergveld. He spent six years as a postdoc in London at Imperial College in the group of Andreas Manz working on microanalytical systems. In 2003 he went back to the University of Twente to work in the BIOS/Lab on a Chip group with Albert van den Berg. His research interests include physical and colloid chemistry, electrochemistry, microplasma physics, micro- and nanofluidics fundamentals and applications for diagnostics, chemical separations and energy conversion.

The narrow confinement of nanopores and nanochannels leads to surprising transport processes which have important consequences for e.g. nanopore DNA sequencing and isotachophoresis. Furthermore, the application of two-phase flow can greatly enhance energy generation efficiency in streaming-potential based systems.
