Robert Kwiatkowski, Vice President, Infectious Disease R&D, Cepheid

Dr. Robert (Bob) Kwiatkowski is currently Vice President of Research and Development for Infectious Diseases at Cepheid in Sunnyvale CA. Bob has a PhD from The Johns Hopkins University and has been involved in molecular diagnostic test development for nearly two decades in both established and startup companies including Becton Dickinson, Third Wave Technologies, and Siemens prior to Cepheid. He is listed as a co-inventor on 14 US patents and has lead teams that have launched tests for HIV, HCV, HPV, Mycobacteria tuberculosis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Flu/RSV, Norovirus, and Cystic Fibrosis among others.

The GeneXpert MTB/Rif cartridge project was initiated in 2005 in collaboration with UMDNJ investigators, with support from NIAID and FIND.  The goal of the project was to develop a rapid, easy to use cartridge for simultaneous detection of M. tuberculosis and rifampin resistance.  This presentation will summarize the development of the cartridge, its launch in 2010, and its global impact to date.
