Changchun Liu's Biography



Changchun Liu, Research Associate Professor, University of Pennsylvania

Changchun Liu is a research associate professor int the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his PhD degree in Electronics Engineering from the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS), Beijing, China. Dr. Liu's research interests include microfluidics, BioMEMS (Biomedical MicroElectroMechanical Systems), biosensors, point-of-care (POC) diagnostics, and micro/nano fabrication technology. He has been involved the design, fabrication and integration of biomedical devices with a focus on POC diagnostic application for 12 years. He is the recipient of NIH Career Development Award (K25). He has published 61 peer-reviewed papers. He also has 4 issued patents and 12 provisional patent applications. His research works have been reported by Medical Device Developments, ACS (American Chemical Society) Chemical & Engineering NEWS, and many other news media.

The recent outbreak of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in the Americas and its devastating impact on fetal development have prompted WHO to declare the ZIKV pandemic as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Rapid and reliable diagnostics for ZIKV are vital since ZIKV-infected individuals display no symptoms or nonspecific symptoms similar to other viral infections. Since immunoassays lack adequate sensitivity and selectivity and are unable to identify active state of infection, molecular diagnostics is an effective means to detect ZIKV soon after infection and throughout pregnancy. In this talk, I will present our recent effort towards the development of instrument-free point-of-care molecular detection of ZIKV, including: 1) highly sensitive isothermal amplification assay for ZIKV, 2) multifunctional isothermal reactor chip for ZIKV detection in saliva sample; 3) electricity-free smart cup for isothermal amplification.
