Peter Gardner's Biography

Peter Gardner, Head, University of Manchester

Dr Peter Gardner is currently a Reader in the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science (CEAS) at the University of Manchester. He obtained his PhD in 1988 from the University of East Anglia. Then, in 1994 after Post Doc positions in Berlin and Cambridge he became a Lecturer in Chemistry Department at UMIST and in 2004, he joined (CEAS). Since 2000 he has built a successful biomedical spectroscopy group which has focussed on using vibrational spectroscopy (i) for the diagnosis of cancer, (ii) investigating drug-cell interactions, (iii) investigating stem cell differentiation. Underpinning this work is development of a fundamental understanding the confounding factors, including scattering effects, that may hinder the spectroscopic discrimination of cells and tissue.

The development of a correction algorithm that removes distortion of infrared spectra from single cells now means that spectra can be interpreted in terms of changing biochemistry. Drug-cell interaction studies and the possibility of IR screening will be considered.
