Shamir Jacobino's Biography



Shamir Jacobino, Researcher, University Medical Center Utrecht

Shamir started in December 2011 as a PhD candidate in the Immunotherapy group of dr. Jeanette Leusen at the Laboratory of Translational Immunology, University Medical Center Utrecht. During his PhD, he investigated recombinant IgA antibodies as alternative to IgG antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus and influenza A virus, but also natural protection to RSV by amniotic fluid antibodies (Jacobino et al, JACI 2016). In December 2016 Shamir obtained his PhD and published his thesis entitled “Antibody-mediated immunity against viral respiratory infections”.

RSV is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in young infants. We provide the first evidence that virus-specific antibodies in the lungs of neonates originating from amniotic fluid can protect in the critical first weeks of newborns.
