Roderick Hubbard's Biography

Roderick Hubbard, Professor/Senior Fellow, University of York

Rod Hubbard has been working with methods for analysis and exploitation of protein structure for nearly 35 years. He developed molecular graphics and modelling methods in the 1980s and helped build Structural Biology at York where he determined the structure of many proteins of therapeutic importance. This was combined with studies of protein-ligand interactions and some of the first work in finding small fragments that bind to protein targets. In 1997, he was a founding SAB member of what became Vernalis, where he has spent varying amounts of his time, establishing and applying structure and fragment-based methods for drug discovery. At York, his research is developing fragment methods for chemical biology and industrial biotechnology. In addition, he is a member of various boards and panels for the UK Research Councils and consults with pharmaceutical and technology companies around the world.

I will demonstrate how fragment based discovery methods can identify chemical tools to activate enzyme activity, to identify sites for inhibiting biological processes and to probe the surface of proteins.
