Richard Walmsley's Biography



Richard Walmsley, Professor, University of Manchester

B.Sc. (Microbiology) and Ph.D. (Genetics) at University of Kent (UK), followed by PostDoc at University of Chicago. Currently Professor of Genetics at University of Manchester. Founded Gentronix Ltd in 1999. Research activity moved from yeast genetics to genetic toxicology in human cells. Current interests include the development of experimental strategies to identify misleadingly positive in vitro results.

The in vitro genotoxicity tests were conceived to predict carcinogenicity in novel chemicals. However a reproducibly positive in vitro genotoxicity test result does not necessarily imply a human cancer hazard. This talk explores how chemicals can be saved.
