Urs Meyer, Emeritus Professor, Biozentrum/University of Basel

Dr. Meyer is Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel. He received B.A. and M.D. degrees from the Universities of Geneva and Zürich. After internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Clinical Pharmacology at UCSF and Fellow in Hepatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, Texas. From 1971 to 1974 Urs A. Meyer was Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at UCSF, from 1974 to 1983 Associate Professor and Chief, Division of Clinical Pharmacology, University of Zürich and from 1983 to 2008 Professor and Chairman of Pharmacology, University of Basel. Research interests have focused on interindividual variation of drug response, from studying pharmacogenetic diseases (porphyria) to the pharmacogenomics of drug disposition. He has authored over 300 publications and is listed on ISI’s Highly Cited Researcher’s database.

Interindividual variability in drug efficacy and toxicity is a major cause of therapeutic failure and contributes to high attrition rates during drug development. The presentation will deal with the genetic causes of variability and the use of this knowledge in drug targeting and dose adaptation and as a biomarker of clinical outcome.
